NEW PROGRAM HIGHLIGHTS
  • PSYCHOLOGY OF PSYCHOTHERAPEUTIC COMMUNICATION (100:117) (Tijana Mandic, PhD)

    The course will introduce students to the basic concepts of therapeutic communication: information, communication stimuli-communication response, interaction and transaction, systemic patterns of communication, and double binds in communication. Students will learn how to create an optimal psychotheraperutic strategy for the specific client and interventions and techniques to enable the optimum strategy. The course will include the use of verbal and non-verbal communication, creating, maintaining and ending the bonding process through communication, and follow up of the chosen strategy.
     

  • MODELS OF PSYCHOTHERAPEUTIC CHANGE (300:317)
    (Tijana Mandic, PhD)

    Students will learn to understand and balance the complex nature of the change/stability process including pitfalls of the changing process. Students will learn to understand and work with the client's resistance to change. The course provides an overview of the diversity of the changing process (e.g. differentiating, enabling and triggering change, understanding the different qualitity among oppositional, relational and essential personality changes). Seven basic models and myths of change, optimal to resolving different pathologies: (Salome, Dionysis, Phoenix, Brutus, Nemesis, Pygmalion and Chimera) will be included as well as the Meta models of change.
     

  • DIAGNOSES, ASSESSMENT AND TREATMENT OF CHILDHOOD AND ADOLESCENT DISORDERS      (100:132)
    (Silvia Juarez-Marazzo, LCSW, NCPsyA.)

    This contemporary approach to one of the Institute's fundamental courses, will provide a comprehensive overview of an Adlerian theoretical perspective integrated into a model of psychotherapeutic treatment of children, adolescents and their families. It will also provide an overview of childhood development, techniques of psychosocial assessment, and a familiarization with DSM-IV. Included will be an historical perspective on Alfred Adler and his work with children, case presentations for diagnostic assessment, psychopathology of childhood, essential elements of play therapy and the Adlerian approach to play therapy. Students will learn the Adlerian approach to family therapy and to parenting training. The course will also include the Adlerian approach to treating adolescents including intervention, interpretatation, resistance, transference and counter transference and will use case vignettes.

PLEASE NOTE:  New York State has created four new LICENSED MENTAL HEALTH professions:

1. Psychoanalysis, 
2. Mental Health Counseling, 
3. Marriage and Family Therapy, 
4. Creative Arts Therapy.

The State is in the process of refining the standards for licensing for these professions. We anticipate that graduates of the Alfred Adler Institute of New York will meet the standards for Psychoanalysis and for Mental Health Counseling.

The Alfred Adler Center for Mental Health has been serving the New York community for nearly 50 years. The Center is a non-sectarian, non-profit organization committed to providing the highest standard of psychotherapeutic services to adults, adolescents and children.

Psychotherapy and counseling at the Center are based on the theories and methods of Alfred Adler. Adler emphasized the uniqueness of the individual and the importance of active involvement with others. 

Our therapists are graduates of The Alfred Adler Institute of New York, the post-graduate training institute, chartered by the Board of Regents of the State of New York. Therapists are certified by the National Association for the Advancement of Psychoanalysis and have a minimum of 5 years advanced training and clinical experience.

FEES:

At the Alfred Adler Center for Mental Health, all fees are on a sliding scale based on the client’s ability to pay. Our fees are insurance reimbursable by some insurance plans.

HOURS:

The Center offers convenient hours for client appointments between
9 AM and 8 PM weekdays.

LOCATION:

The Center is located at 594 Broadway (at the Southeast corner of Houston Street) Suite 1213 New York, NY 10012 convenient to all forms of public transportation.
